Hello! I'm Katharine Emlen, welcome to my website.

I confess....I am one of those people who tends to follow my imagination wherever and whenever it calls. I can't help it. It's is hard for me to see a butterfly go by and not want to follow it. Or see the light shift just so without grabbing my camera. I believe that stories are everywhere when we allow them to be and I find them through words and a lens.

I love playing with language, creating an atmosphere, and capturing the essense of place. I'm a writer and photographer in both my personal and professional life, and blend these passions together when I work as a freelance creative.

Thank you for visiting my site. I always enjoy meeting people and colaborating on projects, so if you'd like to connect, feel free to E MAIL ME and say hello!

AS A WRITER

I am as a writer in both my personal and professional life.

CREATIVE WRITING

I wrote my first story Birthday Game Run when I was 16 years old. It's a true story about getting stuck in a pride of lions while living in Nakuru, Kenya. We lived in the National Park in a small stone house with out elecricity, where elephant, giraffe and zebra played in our yard, and a bat slept over my head! Much of my early writings were based off these childhood years.

I have a fondness for poetry and have written over 65 poems for The Poetry of Nature, a series of work that pairs macro-photography with poetry. Each one stanza poem tells the story of what the image could be if we allow nature to be sentient.

I like to blend humor with medical woes like I did with Kona Colonic, performed live at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Lincoln City Oregon, or, like Wonky Breasts published by Hippocampus Magazine.

And, I'll allow just about anything to have a point of view, like the tombstone in Endless Eternity. This poem was turned into a short film and featured at The Eugene International Film Festival, Da Vinci Days, and Damah Spiritual Experiences in Film.

It was the innagural poem featured on KBOO Radio Writer's Read, and just made it's print debut as All Around You in the innugral issue of ReView Magazine.

COPYWRITING

When I work as a Copywriter I go into character to communicate a client's message using their voice and stye, often helping them say what they cannnot express.

This can be fun, professional, or deeply personal like Don't Worry Dad, a story about a young athlete who becomes brain damaged due to a football injury. Produced under the title, What Happened Dad, the film was discussed on ESPN and effectively changed the safety standards regarding high school football equipment.

I have a knack for writing dialogue and am often asked to script narratives, from serious testimonials, like The Oregon Center for Applied Science's Smoking Cessation Project to fun, interactive banter for radio spots like Java Journeys a mobile coffee delivery service.

My favorite thing to do as a Copywriter is create product stories that mimic the J Peterman style of copywriting. From a family owned candle shop Cascade Candle to an industrial art gallery, The Propeller, this style of copywriting is my favorite.

I love helping people as a Freelance Creative so if you'd like to work together, feel free to reach out at any time!

AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

My work as a photographer is focused on storytelling, capturing the essence of place and evoking emotion. I especially love macro photography which I often pair with poetry. I like to take an unusual approach to my work, providing alternate angles of consideration, closing things off to eliminate context, and finding beauty in the most disheveled of places. You can see more of my work by clicking here.
